Install Telegram and Create Your Account
Download Telegram from the App Store for iPhone or Google Play Store for Android. You can also download it from telegram.org for desktop platforms. Open the app and register with your phone number. Telegram will send you a verification code via SMS or through an existing Telegram session if you have one. Enter the code and set up your profile with your name and an optional profile photo. Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram allows you to set a username that others can use to contact you without knowing your phone number. Go to Settings, tap on your profile name, and set a unique username. This is a significant privacy advantage because you can share your Telegram username instead of your phone number. Telegram also supports two-step verification, which you should enable immediately under Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification.
Configure Telegram Privacy Settings
Telegram offers granular privacy controls that exceed what WhatsApp provides. Navigate to Settings, then Privacy and Security. Under Phone Number, set who can see your number to Nobody, and set who can find you by your number to My Contacts. This prevents strangers from discovering your phone number through Telegram. Under Last Seen and Online, choose who can see your online status. Under Profile Photo, restrict visibility to your contacts only. Under Forwarded Messages, set it so that forwarded messages do not link back to your profile. Enable Passcode Lock to add an extra layer of security when opening the app. Under Privacy and Security, review the Active Sessions section to see all devices where your Telegram account is logged in. Remove any sessions you do not recognize. Set an account self-destruct timer under the If Away For setting to automatically delete your account after a period of inactivity.
Use Secret Chats for Sensitive Conversations
Telegram offers two types of chats: regular Cloud Chats and Secret Chats. Regular Cloud Chats are encrypted in transit and stored encrypted on Telegram servers, allowing you to access them from multiple devices. However, for truly sensitive conversations, use Secret Chats, which provide end-to-end encryption similar to Signal and WhatsApp. To start a Secret Chat, tap the compose button, select New Secret Chat, and choose a contact. Secret Chats have several unique features: they support self-destructing messages with customizable timers, they do not allow message forwarding, they notify you if the other person takes a screenshot, and they are tied to your specific device session. Note that Secret Chats are only available for one-on-one conversations, not group chats. Make it a habit to use Secret Chats for any conversation involving personal, financial, or sensitive information.

Import Your WhatsApp Chat History to Telegram
Telegram offers a built-in feature to import chat history from WhatsApp. First, open WhatsApp and navigate to the conversation you want to transfer. On Android, tap the three-dot menu, select More, then Export Chat. On iPhone, tap the contact name, scroll down, and tap Export Chat. Choose to include or exclude media. When the share sheet appears, select Telegram from the list of apps. Choose the Telegram contact or group where you want to import the messages. Telegram will process the import and display the WhatsApp messages in the chat with their original timestamps. A small label indicates that these messages were imported from WhatsApp. Repeat this process for each conversation you want to transfer. While this method preserves your message history, very large chats with lots of media may take some time to process. This feature makes Telegram one of the easiest platforms to switch to from WhatsApp.

Recreate Groups and Invite Contacts
Create new Telegram groups to replace your WhatsApp group chats. Tap the compose button and select New Group. Add available contacts and give the group a clear, recognizable name. Telegram groups can hold up to 200,000 members, far exceeding WhatsApp limitations. Set group permissions by tapping the group name and selecting Edit. You can control who can send messages, media, stickers, polls, and who can add members. Share the group invite link with WhatsApp group members who have not yet joined Telegram. In the group settings, tap Invite Links to generate a shareable link. Post this link in the corresponding WhatsApp group along with a message encouraging members to join. Telegram also supports topics within groups, allowing you to organize conversations by subject, which is useful for larger groups that discuss multiple topics simultaneously.
Set Up Telegram on All Your Devices
One of Telegram advantages over WhatsApp is true multi-device support. Your regular cloud chats sync seamlessly across all devices without requiring your phone to be online. Download Telegram on your computer from desktop.telegram.org. Install and log in with your phone number. You will receive a verification code through your existing Telegram app on your phone. After verification, all your cloud chats, contacts, and media will sync automatically. You can also use Telegram Web by visiting web.telegram.org in any browser. Telegram supports simultaneous sessions on multiple phones, tablets, and computers. Each session can be managed independently from Settings, Privacy and Security, Active Sessions. This multi-device flexibility means you can access your messages from anywhere, making it a practical replacement for WhatsApp, especially for users who frequently switch between devices throughout the day.
