Signal is more minimalist but covers all essential messaging needs including text, voice, video, group chats, disappearing messages, and file sharing. Signal also offers features like sealed sender, which hides metadata even from Signal's own servers, and screen security to prevent screenshots. For ease of use, both apps are straightforward to set up and use. WhatsApp benefits from network effects since most people already have it installed. Signal requires convincing contacts to switch, which can be a barrier. However, Signal's interface is clean and intuitive, making the transition painless for those who do switch. The recommendation is clear: Signal is the superior choice for anyone who values privacy. The difference in data collection practices is staggering, and Signal's non-profit structure ensures that user privacy remains the top priority rather than an afterthought in a data-driven advertising business.
