Begin your migration by downloading Signal from the official source. On iPhone, open the App Store and search for Signal Private Messenger. On Android, open the Google Play Store and search for Signal. You can also download Signal from the official website at signal.org. Make sure you download the official app published by Signal Messenger LLC to avoid counterfeit apps. After installation, open Signal and follow the setup wizard. You will need to provide your phone number for registration. Signal will send you a verification code via SMS to confirm your number. Enter the code to complete registration. Set up your profile by adding your name and optionally a profile photo. This profile information is encrypted and only visible to your contacts who also use Signal, not to Signal the company.
Before inviting contacts, configure Signal for maximum privacy. Open Signal Settings by tapping your profile icon. Under Privacy, enable Screen Lock to require biometric authentication or a PIN to open Signal. Set Screen Lock Timeout to a short interval like one minute. Enable Registration Lock, which prevents someone from re-registering your phone number on Signal without your PIN. Under Disappearing Messages, set a default timer for new conversations, such as one week or one day, depending on your preference. This ensures messages are automatically deleted after the specified time. Under Privacy, disable Show Calls in Recents if you do not want Signal calls appearing in your phone call history. Review the Sealed Sender settings, which hide your identity from Signal servers when sending messages. These settings establish a strong privacy foundation.
Signal automatically detects which of your phone contacts already use Signal. Open the main Signal screen and tap the compose button (pencil icon) to see a list of your contacts who are already on Signal. You may be surprised to find that several of your contacts are already using the app. For contacts not yet on Signal, you can send them an invitation directly from the app. Tap the compose button, then tap Invite Friends to Signal. This will open a sharing menu where you can send an invite link via SMS, email, or other messaging apps. Craft a personal message explaining why you are switching to Signal and the privacy benefits it offers. People are more likely to join when they receive a personal invitation rather than a generic link. Focus on inviting your most frequent WhatsApp contacts first.

One of the most effective strategies for migrating from WhatsApp is to recreate your important group chats on Signal. Open Signal and tap the compose button, then select New Group. Add the group members who are already on Signal. Give the group a recognizable name that matches or references the original WhatsApp group so members can easily identify it. Set a group avatar if desired. After creating the group, post a welcome message explaining that this is the new home for the group conversation. Then go to the corresponding WhatsApp group and post a message letting members know about the Signal group, including instructions on how to download Signal and join. Share the Signal group link if applicable, which allows new members to join without being individually added. Be patient as group migration typically happens gradually.

While you cannot directly transfer chat history from WhatsApp to Signal, you can manually share important files, photos, and documents. Review your WhatsApp conversations for any critical media that you want to have available in Signal. Save important photos and videos to your device camera roll first, then share them in the relevant Signal conversations. For documents and files, save them to your device storage and then attach them to Signal messages. If you have important voice messages, you will need to save them from WhatsApp to your device and then reshare them. Consider creating a personal Signal note to yourself (by creating a conversation with your own number) where you can store important links, documents, and reference materials that were previously scattered across WhatsApp chats. This serves as a convenient personal archive within Signal.
Enhance your Signal experience by setting up Signal Desktop on your computer. Visit signal.org and download the desktop application for Windows, Mac, or Linux. Install and open the application, which will display a QR code. On your phone, open Signal Settings, tap Linked Devices, then tap Link New Device. Scan the QR code displayed on your computer screen with your phone camera. Signal will sync your contacts and recent messages to the desktop app. Signal Desktop provides the same end-to-end encryption as the mobile app, ensuring your conversations remain private even when using your computer. You can send messages, make voice calls, share files, and participate in group chats from your desktop. This cross-platform availability makes it easier to transition away from WhatsApp, especially for users who relied on WhatsApp Web.

Rather than abruptly abandoning WhatsApp, adopt a gradual transition strategy. Start by making Signal your default messaging app and use it for all new conversations. When someone messages you on WhatsApp, reply there but also suggest continuing the conversation on Signal. Update your WhatsApp status to indicate that you prefer Signal for messaging and include your Signal contact details. Over the course of a few weeks, your most active contacts will have moved to Signal. Set a target date for fully leaving WhatsApp and communicate this to remaining WhatsApp contacts. As the date approaches, send a final reminder message on WhatsApp with clear instructions on how to reach you on Signal. After your target date, follow the WhatsApp deletion guide to permanently delete your account. This phased approach minimizes social disruption and gives everyone time to adjust.
