Download Signal Private Messenger from the App Store or Google Play Store. Open the app and register using your phone number. Signal will send an SMS verification code to confirm your identity. Enter the code and create your Signal PIN, which protects your profile and settings if you ever need to reinstall the app. Set up your profile with your name and optionally a photo. Unlike Messenger, which requires a Facebook account and collects extensive metadata about your conversations, Signal collects virtually no data about you. Signal does not know who you message, when you message them, what you say, or what media you share. Your Signal PIN is used locally to encrypt your profile data and does not give Signal access to any information. Enable Registration Lock in Settings to prevent someone from hijacking your phone number on Signal.
One challenge when switching from Messenger to Signal is that many Messenger contacts may not be in your phone contacts. Start by going through your Messenger conversation list and identifying your most active conversations. For each contact, make sure you have their phone number saved in your phone contacts, as Signal uses phone numbers for identification. If you only know someone through Facebook and do not have their phone number, reach out to them on Messenger and ask for their number, explaining that you are switching to Signal. After saving their numbers, Signal will automatically detect which contacts are already using the app. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover that several of your contacts already have Signal installed. Create a spreadsheet or note listing your top Messenger contacts and whether they are available on Signal, still need to be invited, or need their phone number collected.
Craft personalized messages to invite your Messenger contacts to join you on Signal. Avoid generic mass messages, as personal invitations are significantly more effective. For each important contact, send a Messenger message explaining that you are concerned about Meta collecting and monetizing your private conversations. Mention specific privacy issues such as Messenger conversations being used for targeted advertising, Meta sharing data across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, and the lack of end-to-end encryption for standard Messenger chats. Share the Signal download link and offer to help them set up the app. For contacts who are hesitant, suggest a trial period where they install Signal and use it alongside Messenger to experience the difference. Many people are receptive to the privacy argument once they understand the extent of Meta data collection. Be patient and understanding, as changing communication habits takes time.

Identify the Messenger group chats that are most important to your daily communication. Create equivalent groups on Signal by tapping the compose button and selecting New Group. Add available contacts and give the group the same name as the Messenger group for easy recognition. Signal groups support all the features you are used to from Messenger including text messages, photos, videos, voice messages, document sharing, voice calls, and video calls. Group calls on Signal support multiple participants with full end-to-end encryption. Post a message in each Messenger group announcing the Signal group and sharing instructions for joining. Provide the Signal group invite link if applicable. Appoint group admins who can help manage the transition and encourage other members to switch. Run both groups in parallel during the transition period, gradually directing conversations to Signal.

Signal offers equivalents for most Messenger features you rely on. For text messaging, Signal works identically with support for emojis, reactions, and replies. For photo and video sharing, Signal supports high-quality media sharing with optional view-once mode. For voice and video calls, Signal provides encrypted one-on-one and group calls with excellent quality. For voice messages, simply hold the microphone button to record. For file sharing, Signal supports sending documents, PDFs, and other files up to a generous size limit. Signal also supports stories, similar to Messenger Stories, which disappear after 24 hours and are end-to-end encrypted. One feature Signal does not replicate is Messenger integration with the Facebook ecosystem such as marketplace messages or business page messaging. For these use cases, you may need to maintain Messenger or find alternative platforms. However, for personal communication, Signal fully replaces Messenger functionality.
Once you have established your Signal communications and migrated your essential contacts and groups, it is time to deactivate Messenger. Before doing so, perform a final review of your Messenger conversations to ensure no important information or contacts have been missed. Download your Messenger data following the data download guide in this series. Send one final round of messages to remaining Messenger contacts with your Signal contact information. Then follow the Messenger deactivation guide to deactivate or delete your Messenger account. Remove the Messenger app from all your devices. If you still use Facebook for other purposes, you can deactivate just Messenger while keeping your Facebook account active. However, for maximum privacy, consider deleting your entire Facebook account. Update your contact information wherever it is listed to reflect Signal as your preferred messaging platform.
