WhatsApp allows you to export individual chats as text files with optional media attachments. Open WhatsApp and go to the conversation you want to export. On Android, tap the three-dot menu and select More, then Export Chat. On iPhone, tap the contact name at the top, scroll down, and tap Export Chat. You will be asked whether to include media or export without media. Including media will attach all shared photos, videos, and documents but creates a much larger file. Without media, you get a plain text file of all messages with timestamps. Choose your preferred sharing method such as email, Google Drive, or AirDrop. Repeat this process for every important conversation. For group chats, the export includes messages from all participants with their names clearly labeled.
WhatsApp provides an account information report that contains your profile details, settings, and metadata. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings. Tap Account, then tap Request Account Info. Tap Request Report to initiate the process. WhatsApp will begin compiling your account information, which typically takes about two to three days. You will receive a notification in WhatsApp when the report is ready. The report includes your phone number, profile name, profile photo, about text, group memberships, blocked contacts, and device information. It does not include your actual messages, which is why exporting individual chats separately is important. The report remains available for download within WhatsApp for approximately 30 days. After that period, you would need to submit a new request. Download the report promptly to avoid missing the window.
Create a cloud backup of your entire WhatsApp data. On Android, open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup. Tap Back Up to Google Drive and select a backup frequency. Tap Back Up Now to create an immediate backup. Make sure your Google account is connected and has sufficient storage space. On iPhone, go to Settings, Chats, Chat Backup, and tap Back Up Now to create an iCloud backup. Ensure iCloud Drive is enabled and you have enough iCloud storage. These cloud backups include all your messages, photos, videos, and voice messages. While these backups are primarily designed for restoring WhatsApp on a new device, they also serve as a comprehensive archive of your data. Note that WhatsApp cloud backups may or may not be end-to-end encrypted depending on your settings.

Before creating your final backup, enable end-to-end encryption for your cloud backup to ensure your data remains private even in cloud storage. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Chat Backup. Tap End-to-End Encrypted Backup and select Turn On. You will be asked to create a password or generate a 64-digit encryption key. If you choose a password, make it strong and unique, and store it securely in a password manager. If you choose the encryption key, save it in a very secure location because without it, your backup cannot be recovered. After setting up encryption, tap Create to generate an encrypted backup. This backup is stored on Google Drive or iCloud but can only be decrypted with your password or key. This ensures that neither Google, Apple, nor WhatsApp can access your backed-up messages.

In addition to chat exports and cloud backups, manually save important media files from WhatsApp to your device. On Android, WhatsApp stores media in the Internal Storage WhatsApp Media folder, organized into subfolders for Images, Video, Audio, Documents, and Voice Notes. Use a file manager app to navigate to this folder and copy everything to your computer or external storage. On iPhone, WhatsApp media that you have saved to your camera roll can be found in your Photos app. For media not saved to camera roll, you will need to rely on the chat export and cloud backup methods. Connect your phone to your computer and transfer the media files directly. Organize the transferred files by date or conversation for easier browsing later. This manual approach ensures you have direct access to media files without needing to extract them from backup archives.
Before proceeding with account deletion, verify that all your backups are complete and the data is accessible. Open your exported chat files and confirm they contain all messages and that the timestamps are correct. Check a few media attachments from the exports to ensure photos and videos open properly. Verify your cloud backup by checking the backup date and size in WhatsApp Settings under Chat Backup. Open your account information report and review the contents. Check that the media files you manually transferred to your computer are viewable and not corrupted. If you exported chats via email, confirm all emails were received with their attachments. Create a master checklist of all the chats and data you wanted to preserve and mark each as verified. Only after you are fully satisfied that everything is properly backed up should you proceed with deleting your WhatsApp account.
