Log into your Facebook account using a web browser on your computer for the best experience. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select Settings & Privacy, then click Settings. From the left sidebar, select Your Facebook Information. Click on Download Your Information. This tool allows you to request a comprehensive archive of everything Facebook has stored about you since you created your account. The interface presents multiple options for customizing your download, including date ranges, file formats, and specific data categories. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with all the available options before proceeding, as making the right selections now will save you time and ensure you get exactly the data you need.
At the top of the Download Your Information page, you will see options to customize your request. First, select the date range. If you want a complete archive of all your data, leave it set to All Time. If you only need data from a specific period, adjust the start and end dates accordingly. Next, choose your file format. HTML format creates files that are easy to view in any web browser with a user-friendly interface including clickable navigation and embedded media. JSON format creates machine-readable files that are better suited for developers, data analysis, or importing into other tools. For most users, HTML is the better choice. Finally, select the media quality. High quality preserves your photos and videos at their original resolution but results in much larger file sizes. Medium quality is a good balance between file size and quality.
Facebook organizes your data into numerous categories. Select all categories for a complete archive, or choose specific ones based on your needs. Key categories include: Posts, which contains all your status updates, shared links, and uploaded content. Photos and Videos, which includes every image and video you have uploaded. Comments and Reactions, capturing your interactions on others content. Friends, listing all current and previously removed friends. Messages, containing all your Messenger conversations. Profile Information, including your bio, contact details, and work history. Groups, documenting your group memberships and posts within groups. Pages, showing pages you have liked and managed. Ads Information, revealing the advertising data Facebook has collected about you. Security and Login Information, showing your login history and connected devices. Select each category carefully.
Unlimited access to 6,400+ articles, premium privacy guides, and all Blossend platforms.
After configuring your preferences, click the Create File button to submit your data download request. Facebook will display a confirmation message indicating that your request is being processed. The time required to compile your archive depends on how much data you have and how many categories you selected. For accounts with years of activity, the process can take anywhere from a few hours to several days. Facebook will send you a notification both in the app and via email when your archive is ready for download. You can check the progress by returning to the Download Your Information page, where you will see a section labeled Available Copies showing the status of your request. Do not delete your account before the download is complete, as this will cancel the data export process.

When your archive is ready, return to the Download Your Information page and click the Download button next to your completed archive. You may need to re-enter your password for security verification. The archive will download as one or more ZIP files depending on its size. Large archives may be split into multiple parts that you need to download separately. Save these files to a secure location on your computer. Once downloaded, extract the ZIP files to view your data. If you chose HTML format, open the index.html file in a web browser to navigate through your data with a user-friendly interface. Store copies of the archive in multiple secure locations such as an encrypted external hard drive and an encrypted cloud storage service to prevent data loss.
After extracting your archive, take time to verify that all your data was included. Browse through the different sections and spot-check entries against what you remember posting or sharing on Facebook. Check that photos are properly included and viewable. Open several message threads to confirm conversation histories are complete. Verify that your friends list matches what you expect. Look at your activity log entries to see if they align with your recollection. If you notice significant gaps or missing data, you can submit another download request with different settings or reach out to Facebook support. Note that some very old data may not be available if it was created before Facebook implemented comprehensive data archival. Once you are satisfied with the completeness, you can proceed confidently with account deletion.
