Open the Instagram app on your mobile device or visit instagram.com in a web browser. Navigate to your profile and tap the hamburger menu icon in the top right corner. Select Settings and Privacy from the menu. Scroll down to the Your Activity section and tap Download Your Information. Instagram will present you with options for how you want to receive your data. You can also access this through the Accounts Center if your Instagram is linked to a Meta account. The web browser experience provides a slightly more detailed interface than the mobile app, so consider using a computer for this process. Make sure you are logged into the correct Instagram account if you manage multiple profiles.
Instagram offers two main format options for your data download. HTML format creates browsable files that you can open in any web browser, with your photos and videos organized in folders alongside HTML pages that display your posts, stories, and other content in a readable layout. JSON format exports your data in a structured, machine-readable format that is ideal for developers or anyone who wants to process the data programmatically. Select Complete Copy to download everything, or use the Select Types of Information option to choose specific categories. Key categories include photos and videos, stories, reels, profile information, comments, likes, saved posts, direct messages, followers and following lists, search history, and shopping activity. For a comprehensive backup, select all available categories.
After selecting your preferred format and data categories, enter the email address where you want Instagram to send the download link. Double-check that the email address is correct and accessible, as the download link will be sent exclusively to this address. Tap or click Request Download to submit your request. Instagram will ask you to enter your account password to verify your identity. After verification, you will see a confirmation screen indicating that your request has been received and is being processed. Instagram states that the process can take up to 48 hours, though it often completes within a few hours for accounts with moderate amounts of content. You will receive an email notification when your archive is ready. Check your spam folder if you do not see the email within the expected timeframe.

When your data archive is ready, Instagram will send an email to the address you specified containing a download link. The email will come from Instagram with a subject line related to your data download request. Click the Download Data button or link in the email. Note that this link has an expiration period, typically four days, so download your data promptly after receiving the notification. The link will take you to Instagram where you may need to log in again for verification. The archive will download as a ZIP file. Depending on the amount of content on your account, this file can range from a few megabytes to several gigabytes. Ensure you have sufficient storage space on your device before initiating the download. A stable internet connection is recommended for larger archives.

Once the ZIP file has finished downloading, extract its contents to a folder on your computer. On Windows, right-click the file and select Extract All. On Mac, double-click the ZIP file to automatically extract it. The extracted folder will contain subfolders organized by data type, such as photos, videos, messages, comments, and profile. If you chose HTML format, look for an index file that serves as a starting point for browsing your data. Navigate through each folder to familiarize yourself with the structure. Your photos and videos will be in media folders, often organized chronologically. Messages will be in a separate folder with individual conversation threads. Create a backup of this extracted data on an external drive or encrypted cloud storage. Consider organizing the media files into albums that match how you had them on Instagram for easier future reference.
Thoroughly check your downloaded archive to ensure nothing important is missing. Open random photos and videos to verify they are not corrupted and display correctly. Check that your direct message conversations are complete by comparing a few threads with what you see in the app. Verify that your follower and following lists are accurate. Look for your saved posts and story archives. If anything appears incomplete or corrupted, submit a new download request before deleting your account. For long-term storage, save your archive in at least two separate locations. Consider using an encrypted external hard drive as your primary backup and a trusted encrypted cloud storage service like Tresorit or an encrypted container on your regular cloud storage as a secondary backup. Label your archives clearly with the date of download for future reference.
