Open Settings on your iPhone and tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services. Review every app listed and change their location access permissions. For most apps, set location access to Never or While Using the App. Very few apps genuinely need Always access, with exceptions being navigation apps and weather widgets. Tap System Services at the bottom of the list to review Apple system-level location tracking. Disable Location-Based Apple Ads, Location-Based Suggestions, and Significant Locations. Significant Locations is a feature that tracks places you visit frequently and stores them on your device. Disabling it prevents this historical location tracking. Keep in mind that disabling location services entirely can affect features like Find My iPhone, so selectively manage permissions rather than using a blanket approach. Review these settings periodically as new apps may request location access after installation.
Apple App Tracking Transparency gives you control over which apps can track your activity across other companies apps and websites. Go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Tracking. Toggle off Allow Apps to Request to Track to automatically deny all tracking requests. If you prefer to decide on a case-by-case basis, leave this enabled and review the list of apps that have previously requested tracking permission. Any app showing tracking as enabled is currently permitted to track your activity for advertising purposes. Disable tracking for every app listed unless you have a specific reason to allow it. When apps ask for permission to track in the future, always select Ask App Not to Track. This setting is one of the most impactful privacy controls on iPhone, as it prevents apps from collecting your advertising identifier and building cross-platform profiles of your behavior.
Go through each permission category in Settings under Privacy & Security. Start with Camera permissions and revoke access for any app that does not have a legitimate reason to use your camera. Do the same for Microphone permissions, which are frequently requested by apps that do not need audio recording capabilities. Review Contacts access and remove permissions from apps that do not need your contact list. Many apps request contacts access to upload your address book to their servers for social graph building. Review Photos access and consider using Limited Access for apps that need photo access, which lets you select specific photos rather than giving apps access to your entire photo library. Check Bluetooth permissions, as many retail and analytics apps use Bluetooth to track your physical location in stores. Review Health, Motion & Fitness, and Research Sensor data access. Remove permissions for any app that does not provide clear value from having this data.

Navigate to Settings, then Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode. Ensure you are using a strong alphanumeric passcode rather than a simple four or six-digit PIN. Tap Change Passcode and select Passcode Options, then Custom Alphanumeric Code. Create a passcode that is at least eight characters long with a mix of letters and numbers. Under Allow Access When Locked, disable Notification Center, Control Center, Siri, Reply with Message, Home Control, Wallet, Return Missed Calls, and USB Accessories. Disabling these features on the lock screen prevents someone with physical access to your phone from accessing these functions without unlocking the device. Enable Erase Data, which wipes your iPhone after ten failed passcode attempts. Enable Stolen Device Protection, which requires biometric authentication for sensitive actions when your iPhone is away from familiar locations like your home or workplace.

Open Settings and tap Safari to configure browser privacy. Enable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, which blocks third-party cookies used for advertising tracking. Enable Hide IP Address and set it to From Trackers, or from Trackers and Websites for maximum privacy. Turn on Fraudulent Website Warning to protect against phishing sites. Under Privacy & Security, enable Block All Cookies if you are willing to deal with occasional website compatibility issues, otherwise leave cross-site tracking prevention enabled. Set Close Tabs to After One Day or After One Week to prevent accumulation of browsing data. In the Advanced section, review Website Data to see which sites have stored data on your device and periodically clear this. Consider enabling the Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection setting if available on your iOS version. Enable the privacy-preserving measurement option which allows websites to measure ad effectiveness without tracking you personally.
Tap your name at the top of Settings to access your Apple ID settings. Under Sign-In & Security, ensure two-factor authentication is enabled. Under iCloud, review which apps are syncing data to iCloud and disable syncing for apps that do not need cloud backup. Under Media & Purchases, consider whether personalized recommendations are worth the data collection involved. Go back to the main Settings and navigate to Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements. Disable Share iPhone Analytics, Share iCloud Analytics, Improve Siri & Dictation, and Share with App Developers. Each of these settings sends usage data to Apple and app developers. While Apple claims this data is anonymized, minimizing data sharing is always preferable for privacy. Under Apple Advertising in Settings, disable Personalized Ads to opt out of Apple targeted advertising program. Review Sign in with Apple usage under your Apple ID settings and manage connected applications.

For maximum iPhone privacy, enable Advanced Data Protection for iCloud. Go to Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, then Advanced Data Protection. This feature extends end-to-end encryption to almost all iCloud data categories including iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, Reminders, Safari Bookmarks, Siri Shortcuts, Voice Memos, Wallet Passes, and more. Before enabling, make sure you have a recovery contact or recovery key set up, as Apple cannot help you recover your data if you lose access to your account. For users who face elevated security threats such as journalists, activists, or public figures, consider enabling Lockdown Mode under Settings, Privacy & Security. Lockdown Mode significantly restricts your device functionality to reduce attack surface area. It blocks most message attachment types, disables certain web technologies, blocks incoming FaceTime calls from unknown numbers, and removes shared albums from Photos. Only enable Lockdown Mode if your threat model warrants these trade-offs.
