The most powerful privacy setting on iPhone is App Tracking Transparency, introduced in iOS 14.5. Navigate to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Tracking. You will see a toggle labeled Allow Apps to Request to Track. Turn this toggle off to automatically deny all tracking requests from every app on your device. When this is disabled, apps cannot access your Advertising Identifier (IDFA), which is the unique code used to track your activity across different apps and websites for advertising purposes. Below the toggle, you will see a list of apps that have previously requested tracking permission along with their current status. Review this list and ensure every app shows tracking as disabled. Even after turning off the main toggle, it is worth reviewing this list periodically as system updates can sometimes reset individual app settings. This single change dramatically reduces the amount of cross-app tracking data collected about you.
Apple runs its own advertising network that serves ads in the App Store, Apple News, and Stocks apps. To opt out of Apple personalized ads, go to Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Apple Advertising. Toggle off Personalized Ads. When disabled, Apple will still show you ads but they will not be targeted based on your behavior, interests, or demographics. Apple collects data about your App Store searches, downloads, and usage patterns to build an advertising profile. Disabling personalized ads prevents this profile from being used for ad targeting. You can also tap View Ad Targeting Information to see the demographic data Apple has associated with your Apple ID, including your age range, gender, and interests. While you cannot delete this data directly from this screen, disabling personalized ads ensures it is not actively used. This is a separate system from third-party app tracking and should be disabled in addition to the App Tracking Transparency settings.
Beyond the system-wide settings, many individual apps have their own ad tracking and personalization options buried within their settings menus. Open each frequently used app and navigate to its settings or privacy section. Look for options related to personalized ads, interest-based advertising, data collection, analytics, or ad preferences. For example, in the Amazon app, go to Settings and look for Advertising Preferences. In social media apps, look for Ad Preferences or Privacy Settings sections. In streaming apps like Spotify or Netflix, check for personalization and data sharing options. Turn off every advertising-related toggle you find. Some apps make these settings deliberately difficult to find, requiring you to navigate through multiple menus. In Google apps like Gmail, Maps, or Chrome, tap your profile picture, then Manage Your Google Account, then Data and Privacy to find ad personalization settings specific to your Google account.

Safari has built-in tracking prevention features that complement the system-wide ad tracking controls. Go to Settings, then Safari. Enable Prevent Cross-Site Tracking, which blocks third-party cookies that advertisers use to follow you across websites. Enable Hide IP Address and select From Trackers to prevent advertising networks from using your IP address for tracking. Consider enabling Block All Cookies for maximum privacy, though this may cause some websites to not function properly. Under the Advanced section, turn on Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection if available, setting it to All Browsing. This helps prevent sophisticated tracking techniques that use your browser characteristics to create a unique fingerprint identifying you without cookies. Install a content blocker from the App Store such as 1Blocker or AdGuard that blocks advertising scripts and tracking pixels at the browser level, providing an additional layer of protection against web-based ad tracking.

Apple and third-party app developers collect analytics data that can be used for advertising purposes. Go to Settings, Privacy & Security, then Analytics & Improvements. Disable all four options: Share iPhone Analytics sends device usage data to Apple. Share iCloud Analytics sends iCloud usage patterns to Apple. Improve Siri & Dictation sends audio recordings of your Siri interactions. Share with App Developers sends crash reports and usage statistics to app developers. While Apple states this data is anonymized, research has shown that supposedly anonymous data can often be re-identified. By disabling these settings, you prevent your device from transmitting usage patterns, crash logs, and interaction data that could be used to build behavioral profiles. You can also view and delete previously collected analytics data by scrolling down in the Analytics & Improvements section and tapping Analytics Data. This shows you all the diagnostic reports your device has generated, and you can delete them from this screen.
Enhance your ad-blocking capabilities by using a DNS service that blocks known advertising and tracking domains. While iPhone does not have a built-in Private DNS setting like Android, you can configure it through a DNS profile or a DNS-changing app. Download a DNS configuration app like DNSCloak or AdGuard from the App Store. Configure it to use a privacy-respecting DNS provider like AdGuard DNS, which blocks ads and trackers at the DNS level. Alternatively, you can install a DNS configuration profile manually. Visit the website of your chosen DNS provider and download their iOS configuration profile. Go to Settings, General, VPN & Device Management, and install the profile. Once active, all DNS queries from your device will be routed through the privacy-respecting DNS server, which blocks connections to known ad servers, tracking domains, and analytics services. This provides system-wide ad blocking that works in all apps, not just the browser.
