Before deleting WhatsApp, export your most important conversations. Open WhatsApp, go to the chat you want to save, tap the three-dot menu on Android or the contact name on iPhone, and select Export Chat. You can choose to export with or without media attachments. The exported chat will be saved as a text file along with any media you chose to include. You can send this export to your email, save it to cloud storage, or transfer it to your computer. Repeat this process for every important conversation. Note that group chats can also be exported. This process can be time-consuming if you have many chats, but it ensures you have a permanent record of important conversations, shared links, and media files that you might need later.
In addition to exporting individual chats, download your complete WhatsApp data archive. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then tap Account, then Request Account Info. WhatsApp will generate a report that includes your account information, profile details, group memberships, blocked contacts, and settings. This report takes about three days to generate and will be available for download within the app for approximately one month. The report is provided in a ZIP file containing HTML and JSON files. While this does not include your message content (use chat export for that), it provides a comprehensive overview of your account metadata and settings. This data can be useful for reference when setting up alternative messaging platforms.
Send a message to your most frequent WhatsApp contacts letting them know you are leaving the platform. Share your alternative contact methods such as your Signal number, WeTalkin handle, email address, or SMS number. Consider sending a broadcast message to reach many contacts at once. Go to the Chats tab, tap the three-dot menu, and select New Broadcast. Add all the contacts you want to notify and compose your farewell message. For group chats, post a message in each group explaining your departure and how members can reach you. If you are an admin of any groups, consider transferring admin rights to another trusted member before leaving. Give your contacts at least one to two weeks to acknowledge your message and save your alternative contact details.

Before deleting your account, manually leave all WhatsApp groups. Open each group chat, tap the group name at the top, scroll down, and tap Exit Group. After exiting, you can delete the group chat from your chat list. This is a courteous step that lets group members see that you have left, rather than your account simply disappearing. If you are the sole admin of a group, WhatsApp will automatically assign admin rights to another participant when you leave. However, it is better practice to manually assign admin rights to a trusted member before exiting. Go through your entire chat list and make sure you have left every group. This also prevents any last-minute messages from pulling you back into conversations.

Now proceed with the actual account deletion. Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, tap Account, then tap Delete My Account. You will need to enter your phone number in the full international format including the country code. WhatsApp will display information about what deletion means: your account info and profile photo will be erased, you will be removed from all groups, and your message history on your device will be deleted. Tap Delete My Account to confirm. Unlike Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp account deletion is processed more quickly, though some data may remain on WhatsApp servers for up to 90 days. Your messages that have already been delivered to other users will remain on their devices unless they manually delete them.
After deleting your account, uninstall the WhatsApp application from all your devices. On iPhone, press and hold the WhatsApp icon and select Remove App. On Android, long-press and drag to Uninstall. After uninstalling, manually check your device storage for residual WhatsApp data. On Android, use a file manager to navigate to your internal storage and delete the WhatsApp folder, which may contain cached media, backups, and databases. On iPhone, residual data is typically removed with the app, but check your iCloud settings to delete any WhatsApp backups stored in iCloud. Also remove WhatsApp Web sessions by visiting web.whatsapp.com and logging out of all active sessions. Finally, delete any WhatsApp backups from Google Drive if you use Android.
