Facebook Messenger is tightly integrated with your Facebook account, which means the process for removing it is different from standalone apps. If you have already deleted your Facebook account, Messenger will also be deleted after the grace period. However, if you want to keep your Facebook account but stop using Messenger, you can only deactivate Messenger, not delete it independently. Deactivation hides your profile from Messenger, prevents people from contacting you through it, and removes your active status. However, your previous messages will still be visible to people you chatted with. Understanding this distinction is important so you have realistic expectations about what deactivation accomplishes versus full deletion through your Facebook account settings.
Before deactivating Messenger, download all your conversation data. Since Messenger data is part of your Facebook data, go to Facebook Settings, click Your Facebook Information, and select Download Your Information. Under the categories section, deselect everything except Messages. Choose your preferred date range and file format. Click Create File and wait for Facebook to generate the archive. You will receive a notification when the download is ready, which can take several hours. The archive will include all your text messages, shared photos, videos, audio messages, files, and other attachments from both individual and group conversations. This is your only opportunity to preserve these conversations if you plan to fully delete your Facebook account later.
Go through your Messenger conversations and manually save any important files, documents, photos, or videos that were shared. While the data download captures most content, some file types or very old media may not be perfectly preserved in the archive. Open each important conversation and scroll through shared media by tapping the contact name and selecting Photos & Media or Files. Save anything critical directly to your device or cloud storage. Pay special attention to shared documents like PDFs, spreadsheets, or work files that may not exist anywhere else. If you have been using Messenger as an informal file-sharing tool, this step is especially important. Create organized folders on your computer to categorize the saved files by conversation or topic for easy retrieval later.

Send messages to your regular Messenger contacts informing them of your departure. Provide alternative ways to reach you such as email, SMS, Signal, or WeTalkin. For contacts you communicate with frequently, send individual personalized messages explaining your decision and making sure they have your updated contact details. For less frequent contacts, a brief standardized message is sufficient. If you are part of Messenger group chats for work, family, or friend groups, post an announcement in each group. Consider whether any of these groups should migrate to a more privacy-respecting platform and offer to help coordinate the move. Some people rely heavily on Messenger, so give them adequate notice of at least a week before you proceed with deactivation.

To deactivate Messenger, open the Messenger app on your phone. Tap your profile picture in the top left corner to access settings. Scroll down and tap Legal & Policies, then tap Deactivate Messenger. You will be asked to enter your Facebook password to confirm your identity. After entering your password, tap Continue to proceed with deactivation. Messenger will ask you for a reason for deactivating, which is optional. Tap Deactivate to complete the process. Your Messenger profile will immediately become hidden, and you will no longer receive messages. Note that if you log back into the Messenger app or send a message through Facebook, your Messenger account will be automatically reactivated. To permanently delete Messenger, you must delete your entire Facebook account.
After deactivating, uninstall the Messenger app from all your devices. On iPhone, press and hold the Messenger icon, tap Remove App, and confirm deletion. On Android, go to Settings, Apps, find Messenger, and tap Uninstall. Also check for and remove Messenger Lite if installed. Clear any browser data for messenger.com if you have used the web version. On your computer, remove any Messenger desktop applications. Check your browser extensions and remove any Messenger-related add-ons. Finally, review your notification settings on your phone to ensure no residual Messenger notification channels remain active. On Android, you can find these in Settings, Apps, Messenger, Notifications. Removing all traces of the app helps ensure you do not accidentally reactivate your account by tapping a notification.
