Threads by Meta is directly linked to your Instagram account, which creates a unique challenge when trying to delete it. Originally, deleting Threads required deleting your Instagram account as well, but Meta has since introduced the ability to delete your Threads profile independently. However, the process and available options may vary depending on your region and the current version of the app. Before proceeding, make sure your Threads and Instagram apps are updated to the latest version to access the most current deletion options. Understanding this relationship is crucial because any action you take on Threads could potentially affect your Instagram presence. Check the Threads settings carefully to confirm that independent deletion is available in your region.
Before deleting your Threads account, download a copy of your data. Open the Threads app and go to your profile by tapping the profile icon at the bottom right. Tap the two-line menu icon at the top right, then select Account. Look for the Download Your Information or Your Information option. Follow the prompts to request a data download. Threads will compile your posts, replies, likes, followers list, and profile information into a downloadable archive. The processing time varies but typically takes a few hours. You will receive a notification in the app when your download is ready. Alternatively, since Threads data may be bundled with Instagram data, you can also request a download through Instagram Settings under Your Activity and Download Your Information, making sure to include Threads data.
Before deleting your account, consider manually removing your posts and replies. While account deletion should remove your content, manually deleting posts ensures they are processed for removal from Meta servers sooner. Go to your Threads profile and tap on each post individually. Tap the three-dot menu on each post and select Delete. Confirm the deletion when prompted. Repeat this for all your posts and replies. If you have a large number of posts, this can be tedious, but it adds an extra layer of assurance that your content is removed. Pay attention to any posts that received significant engagement, as these may be cached or screenshotted by others. While you cannot control what others have saved, removing the original content from the platform is still a meaningful privacy step.

Open the Threads app and navigate to your profile. Tap the menu icon and go to Account settings. Look for the option labeled Deactivate Profile or Delete Profile. If you want a temporary removal with the option to return, choose Deactivate. If you want permanent removal, choose Delete. When selecting Delete, Threads will inform you about what will be removed including your profile, posts, likes, and followers. You may be asked to enter your Instagram password to confirm the action. After confirmation, your Threads profile enters a 30-day deletion period. During this time, your profile is hidden and inaccessible to other users. If you log back into Threads during this period, the deletion will be canceled. Make sure not to open the Threads app during this waiting period.

Immediately after initiating deletion, uninstall the Threads app from all your devices. On iPhone, long-press the Threads icon and tap Remove App. On Android, long-press and select Uninstall. Clear your browser cache and cookies for threads.net if you have ever accessed the web version. Remove any saved passwords for Threads from your password manager. Since Threads is tied to Instagram, be cautious when using Instagram during the 30-day deletion period. Avoid tapping any Threads-related prompts or links within the Instagram app, as these could potentially reactivate your Threads profile. Disable Threads notifications in your phone settings to prevent any push notifications from tempting you to reopen the app. Check your email for any messages from Threads and ignore any re-engagement emails.
After 30 days have passed since initiating deletion, verify that your Threads profile has been removed. Ask a friend to search for your username on Threads to confirm your profile no longer appears. You can also try visiting your profile URL directly in a web browser to check if it returns a not-found error. If your profile still appears, you may need to contact Meta support or re-initiate the deletion process. Keep in mind that some cached versions of your profile may appear in search engine results for a period of time after deletion. You can request removal of these cached pages through Google Search Console or by submitting removal requests directly to the search engines. Document the completion of your deletion for your personal records.
