Open Signal on your phone or desktop and tap or click the compose button (pencil icon). Select New Group from the options. Signal will display your contacts list showing everyone who uses Signal. Select the members you want to add to the group. You can add up to 1,001 members in a Signal group. After selecting members, tap or click Next. Enter a descriptive group name that helps members identify the purpose of the group. Add a group avatar by tapping the camera icon and selecting or taking a photo. Group avatars help members quickly identify the group in their conversation list. Tap or click Create to finalize the group. Signal will send a group creation notification to all members. All group messages in Signal are end-to-end encrypted, meaning only group members can read the messages. Signal servers never have access to group content, membership lists, or group metadata. This makes Signal groups fundamentally more private than WhatsApp, Telegram, or Messenger group chats.
After creating the group, tap the group name at the top of the conversation to access group settings. Configure who can edit group info such as the group name, avatar, and description. You can set this to All Members or Only Admins. Configure who can add new members. Setting this to Only Admins gives you control over group membership and prevents unwanted additions. Set Disappearing Messages for the group to automatically delete messages after a specified time period. Options range from 30 seconds to four weeks. Disappearing messages add an extra layer of privacy by ensuring conversations do not persist indefinitely. If your group discusses sensitive topics, consider a shorter timer like 24 hours or one week. Review the group link setting, which allows you to create an invite link that anyone can use to join the group. If you want to maintain strict control over membership, keep this disabled and add members manually. If the group link is enabled, you can require admin approval for new members joining via the link.
Effective group management requires thoughtful admin configuration. In the group settings, you can see the complete member list. Tap any member name to see options for promoting them to admin or removing them from the group. Assign admin roles to trusted members who can help manage the group, especially for larger groups. Admins can add and remove members, change group settings, approve join requests, and revoke the group invite link. Consider having at least two admins to ensure the group remains manageable if one admin is unavailable. To remove a member, tap their name in the member list and select Remove from Group. The removed member will no longer be able to see new messages but may retain messages from before their removal on their device. If you need to revoke a group invite link because it has been shared too widely, go to group settings, Group Link, and tap Reset Link to generate a new link that invalidates the old one.

Signal groups support rich communication features that make them suitable for replacing group chats from other platforms. Send text messages, photos, videos, voice messages, documents, and contacts within the group. Use the mention feature by typing the at symbol followed by a member name to notify specific people in busy group chats. React to messages with emoji reactions by long-pressing any message and selecting a reaction. Quote reply to specific messages by swiping right on a message (mobile) or right-clicking and selecting Reply (desktop) to maintain context in fast-moving conversations. Share your location within the group when needed using the attachment menu. Signal groups support voice calls and video calls with multiple participants, all end-to-end encrypted. Start a group call by tapping the video camera icon in the group conversation header. Group calls support multiple participants with a grid layout and can be joined by any group member at any time.

For groups to function well, especially those replacing chats from other platforms, establish clear communication norms. Post a welcome message when creating the group that explains the group purpose, expected behavior, and any privacy-related guidelines. For example, remind members not to screenshot and share conversations outside the group. If the group discusses sensitive topics, ask members to enable disappearing messages and respect the privacy of the content shared. Establish whether the group is for time-sensitive communications that warrant notifications or for casual discussion where members can check at their leisure. This helps members configure their notification settings appropriately. For larger groups, consider establishing guidelines about off-topic discussions and when to create separate groups for subtopics. Periodically review group membership and remove inactive members who may have left the organization or no longer need access. A well-managed group with clear expectations creates a better experience and encourages members to remain on Signal rather than drifting back to less private platforms.
If you are moving a group from WhatsApp, Messenger, or another platform to Signal, approach the migration strategically. First, create the Signal group and add the members who are already on Signal. Post a message in the original group chat on the other platform explaining that the group is moving to Signal and why. Include brief instructions on how to download and set up Signal. Share the Signal group invite link if you have enabled it, making it easy for members to join with a single click. Set a transition period of one to two weeks during which both groups are active. During this period, cross-post important messages to both platforms to ensure no one misses critical information. Gradually encourage members to use the Signal group as the primary channel. After the transition period, post a final message in the old group directing any remaining members to Signal and then leave the old group. Track migration progress by noting which members have joined Signal and send personal follow-up messages to those who have not yet made the switch.
