Visit brave.com and download Brave Browser for your operating system. Brave is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. On desktop, download the installer and run it to complete installation. On mobile, download from the App Store or Google Play Store. When you first open Brave, it will offer to import your bookmarks, history, and saved passwords from your current browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. You can choose to import these or start fresh for maximum privacy. If you import from Chrome, be aware that this brings over your browsing history, which you may want to clear after import. Brave is built on the Chromium engine, the same foundation as Google Chrome, which means it supports all Chrome extensions and provides familiar browsing performance while adding significant privacy protections on top of the standard browsing experience.
Brave Shields is the built-in content blocking system that protects you from ads, trackers, and fingerprinting. Click the Brave lion icon in the address bar to access Shields settings for the current site. For global configuration, go to Settings, then Shields. Set Trackers and Ads Blocking to Aggressive, which blocks first-party and third-party ads and trackers. Set Upgrade Connections to HTTPS to Strict, which forces all connections to use encrypted HTTPS when possible. Set Block Fingerprinting to Strict, which prevents websites from using your browser characteristics to create a unique identifier. Set Block Cookies to Only Block Cross-Site Cookies, which prevents third-party tracking cookies while maintaining website functionality. If a website breaks due to strict settings, you can lower the shields on a per-site basis by clicking the lion icon while on that site. The Shields panel shows real-time statistics of how many trackers, ads, and scripts have been blocked.
Replace Google as your default search engine with Brave Search, which does not track your queries or build a profile about you. Go to Settings, then Search Engine, and select Brave from the dropdown menu. Brave Search uses its own independent search index rather than relying on Google or Bing results, making it truly independent from Big Tech search infrastructure. Brave Search does not collect your IP address, does not track your search history, and does not create user profiles for advertising. If you find that Brave Search occasionally does not return the results you need, you can use the search engine fallback feature or add additional search engines as alternatives. You can also add custom search engines using the Manage Search Engines option. Consider adding DuckDuckGo or Startpage as secondary options for queries where Brave Search results are insufficient.

Navigate to Settings, then Privacy and Security. Disable Send a Do Not Track request with your browsing traffic, as paradoxically this can be used for fingerprinting and most websites ignore it anyway. Enable Clear Browsing Data on Exit to automatically clean up cookies, cache, and history when you close the browser. Under Social Media Blocking in Settings, disable all social media login buttons and embedded content. This includes toggles for Google login buttons, Facebook logins and embedded posts, Twitter embedded tweets, and LinkedIn embedded content. These social media embeds act as tracking beacons that report your browsing activity back to their respective companies even if you do not interact with them. Each embedded social media widget creates a request back to the company servers that includes the URL of the page you are visiting, allowing them to build a browsing profile. Blocking these embeds significantly reduces social media companies ability to track you across the web.

Brave includes a built-in integration with the Tor network for maximum anonymity. To use it, go to the menu and select New Private Window with Tor. This routes your traffic through the Tor network, which bounces your connection through multiple encrypted relays around the world, making it extremely difficult to trace your browsing activity back to you. Unlike the regular private window which simply does not save history, the Tor window actively masks your IP address and location from the websites you visit. Use Tor windows for sensitive searches, researching medical conditions, visiting websites anonymously, or any activity where you want maximum privacy. Be aware that Tor browsing is significantly slower than regular browsing due to the multiple relay hops. Some websites may also block or challenge Tor connections. For daily browsing, the regular Brave browser with Shields provides excellent privacy without the speed trade-off.
While Brave includes excellent built-in privacy protections, a few additional extensions can further enhance your privacy. Since Brave supports Chrome extensions, visit the Chrome Web Store and install uBlock Origin for advanced ad and tracker blocking that complements Brave Shields. Install Privacy Badger by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which learns to detect invisible trackers over time. Consider installing ClearURLs, which removes tracking parameters from URLs automatically. Install HTTPS Everywhere if Brave native HTTPS upgrade does not cover all sites you visit. For advanced users, consider NoScript or uMatrix for granular JavaScript control, though these can break many websites and require significant configuration. Avoid installing too many extensions, as each additional extension increases your browser fingerprint and potential attack surface. The goal is to complement Brave built-in protections without creating conflicts or redundancies that could actually reduce your privacy.
