Our Verdict
Telegram and Messenger occupy very different positions on the privacy spectrum, and while neither is ideal for high-security communication, Telegram is dramatically better than Messenger for privacy-conscious users. The fundamental difference lies in their business models: Telegram is funded through premium subscriptions and limited advertising in public channels, while Messenger exists to fuel Meta's surveillance advertising machine. Telegram offers Secret Chats with end-to-end encryption using the MTProto protocol, though standard chats use only client-server encryption. This means Telegram can technically access the content of regular chats stored on its servers. However, Telegram has a strong track record of resisting government data requests and has been banned in multiple countries for refusing to hand over encryption keys. Telegram's client apps are open source, and the platform allows users to create accounts with usernames without revealing their phone numbers to contacts. Telegram also offers self-destructing messages, two-factor authentication, and the ability to delete messages for all participants without a time limit. Messenger, by contrast, is one of the most invasive apps in existence from a data collection perspective. It collects data across dozens of categories including contacts, location, financial information, browsing history, purchase history, health data, search history, and extensive usage metadata. Even with the recent addition of default end-to-end encryption, Messenger continues to collect enormous amounts of metadata that reveal your communication patterns, social graph, and behavior. All of this data is linked to your Facebook identity and used for targeted advertising. The fact that Meta generates virtually all its revenue from advertising should tell users everything they need to know about how their data is treated. In terms of features, both apps are feature-rich. Telegram offers channels, supergroups, bots, stickers, file sharing up to 2GB, and excellent multi-device support. Messenger offers stories, games, business tools, AR effects, and deep integration with Facebook and Instagram. Telegram's feature set is generally more powerful and more open, while Messenger's features are designed to keep users within Meta's ecosystem. Both apps are user-friendly and available on all major platforms. Messenger has the advantage of being tied to Facebook's massive user base, but this same connection is precisely what makes it a privacy liability. Telegram is the clear winner in this comparison. While it has room for improvement, particularly in making end-to-end encryption the default for all chats, its overall approach to user data is incomparably better than Messenger's. Users moving from Messenger to Telegram will experience a significant upgrade in both privacy and functionality.
