ProtonMail and Gmail are the two most prominent email services on opposite ends of the privacy spectrum. ProtonMail was created by CERN scientists specifically to provide encrypted, private email. Gmail was created by Google to provide free email funded by scanning user messages for advertising purposes. While Google stopped scanning email content for ads in 2017, Gmail remains deeply integrated into Google's data collection ecosystem. ProtonMail uses end-to-end encryption for emails sent between ProtonMail users, meaning even Proton cannot read the content of these messages. For emails to non-ProtonMail users, ProtonMail offers password-protected encrypted messages. ProtonMail is based in Switzerland, which has some of the strongest privacy laws in the world and is outside the jurisdiction of the Five Eyes and Fourteen Eyes intelligence alliances. ProtonMail does not require personal information to create an account, does not log IP addresses by default (though this can be enabled and was controversially used in a French activist case), and uses zero-access encryption so that stored emails cannot be read by Proton even if servers are compromised. The service is open source and has undergone independent security audits. Gmail provides transport-layer encryption (TLS) for emails in transit and encryption at rest on Google's servers, but Google holds the encryption keys and can access email content. Gmail scans email content for features like smart categorization, spam filtering, and suggested replies. Google collects metadata from Gmail including who you email, when, how often, and attachment information. This data is integrated with your broader Google profile. Gmail's integration with Google's ecosystem means that information from your emails can influence ads you see across Google's properties. Gmail's massive user base and feature set, including 15GB of free storage, powerful search, labels, and tight integration with Google Workspace, make it the dominant email service globally. From a features perspective, Gmail is more polished and feature-rich. Its search capabilities, spam filtering, and integration with Calendar, Drive, and Meet are industry-leading. ProtonMail has improved significantly but still lacks some of Gmail's convenience features. ProtonMail's calendar and drive products are growing but not yet as mature as Google's offerings. However, ProtonMail includes a built-in VPN service (Proton VPN) with paid plans, adding additional privacy value. Switching from Gmail to ProtonMail requires effort, including updating contacts and accounts with your new email address. ProtonMail offers import tools to ease the transition, but it is not seamless. The free tier of ProtonMail is more limited than Gmail's, and paid plans start at a few dollars per month. ProtonMail is the definitive winner for privacy. Email is one of the most sensitive communication channels most people use, containing financial information, personal correspondence, and account recovery details. Protecting email with end-to-end encryption should be a priority, and ProtonMail makes this accessible to everyone.
Recommended for Privacy
Based on our analysis, ProtonMail is the better choice for users who prioritize privacy. It collects less data and offers stronger privacy protections compared to Gmail.
