Our Verdict
Proton Drive and iCloud are both positioned as privacy-conscious cloud storage options, but they differ in important ways. Proton Drive offers end-to-end encryption for all stored files by default, while iCloud's encryption model is more complex and, until recently, left significant gaps in privacy protection. Proton Drive wins this comparison, though iCloud with Advanced Data Protection enabled is a respectable option for Apple users. Proton Drive encrypts all files, file names, and metadata on the user's device before uploading to servers. Proton never has access to encryption keys and cannot decrypt stored content. This protection is automatic and requires no configuration. Proton Drive is open source, based in Switzerland under strong privacy laws, and operated by a company whose entire business model is built on providing privacy. The encryption is applied uniformly to all data types with no exceptions. Apple's iCloud has evolved significantly on privacy. The introduction of Advanced Data Protection in late 2022 brought end-to-end encryption to most iCloud categories including iCloud Drive, Photos, Notes, Reminders, and device backups. However, this feature is not enabled by default, requiring users to opt in through settings. Without Advanced Data Protection, Apple holds the encryption keys for most iCloud data and can access it, including in response to law enforcement requests. Even with Advanced Data Protection enabled, iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendars remain without end-to-end encryption due to interoperability requirements. Apple has also faced scrutiny for its planned client-side CSAM scanning feature, which, although paused, raised concerns about the potential for on-device content analysis before encryption. Apple's advantage lies in ecosystem integration. iCloud seamlessly syncs data across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. For Apple users, iCloud provides a frictionless experience for photos, documents, device backups, and app data. Proton Drive works across platforms but does not offer the same depth of operating system integration that iCloud provides within Apple's ecosystem. In terms of features, iCloud offers more storage tiers, photo management features, device backup capabilities, and tight integration with Apple's productivity apps. Proton Drive focuses on secure file storage and sharing, with a growing but less mature feature set. Proton Drive wins because its privacy protections are stronger, more consistent, and enabled by default. Users do not need to discover and enable optional settings to get end-to-end encryption. For Apple users who need iCloud's ecosystem integration, enabling Advanced Data Protection is strongly recommended, but Proton Drive remains the more private option overall due to its default-encrypted architecture and the transparency that comes from being open source.
