LineageOS and stock Android (with Google services) offer dramatically different privacy experiences despite sharing the same underlying open-source Android base. LineageOS strips away Google's data collection infrastructure, while stock Android is deeply integrated with Google's advertising and data analytics ecosystem. For users who want Android's flexibility without Google's surveillance, LineageOS is the clear winner. LineageOS is a free, open-source operating system based on the Android Open Source Project. It ships without Google apps or services, meaning there is no Google Play Store, no Google Maps, no Gmail, and no Google Assistant preinstalled. This eliminates the constant stream of data that stock Android sends to Google. LineageOS does not include advertising identifiers, does not phone home with telemetry, and does not track location in the background. Users have full control over their device and can choose which apps to install, opting for privacy-respecting alternatives from F-Droid or sideloaded APKs. LineageOS also supports Privacy Guard, a built-in permission manager that provides granular control over what data each app can access. Stock Android with Google services is one of the most data-intensive platforms in existence. A 2021 study by Trinity College Dublin found that a Pixel phone running stock Android sends approximately 1MB of data to Google every 12 hours even when idle and not being used. This includes device identifiers, location data, WiFi network details, and telemetry from preinstalled apps. Google Play Services, which is deeply embedded in stock Android, collects location data, usage patterns, app installation data, and more. The Google advertising ID enables cross-app tracking, and Google Assistant may store voice recordings. While Google has added some privacy controls over the years, the default configuration maximizes data collection. The trade-off with LineageOS is app compatibility and convenience. Without Google Play Services, many apps that rely on Google APIs (maps, push notifications, in-app purchases) may not function correctly. Users can install MicroG, an open-source reimplementation of Google Play Services, to restore some compatibility, but it is not a complete replacement. Banking apps and apps with SafetyNet/Play Integrity checks may refuse to run on LineageOS. LineageOS supports a wider range of devices than GrapheneOS, extending the life of older phones that would otherwise be abandoned by manufacturers. Installation requires unlocking the bootloader and flashing the ROM, which varies in difficulty by device. LineageOS wins on privacy with a strong score of 85. It demonstrates that Android's core can be a privacy-respecting platform when decoupled from Google's services. The score is lower than GrapheneOS's 98 because LineageOS does not include the same level of security hardening, but it provides a massive privacy improvement over stock Android for users willing to accept some app compatibility trade-offs.
Recommended for Privacy
Based on our analysis, LineageOS is the better choice for users who prioritize privacy. It collects less data and offers stronger privacy protections compared to Android (Stock/Google).
