Our Verdict

Element and Slack are both team communication platforms, but they approach privacy and data ownership very differently. Element is built on the Matrix protocol, an open standard for decentralized, encrypted communication. Slack is a proprietary, centralized platform where all data resides on Slack's servers. For organizations that care about data sovereignty and privacy, Element is the superior choice. Element supports end-to-end encryption for all direct messages and can enable it for group rooms. Built on the Matrix protocol, Element allows organizations to self-host their own server (using Synapse or Dendrite), giving them complete control over their data. Messages, files, and metadata stay on infrastructure the organization controls. The Matrix protocol is federated, meaning different organizations can communicate across servers while maintaining their own data sovereignty. Element and Matrix are fully open source, allowing complete transparency and customization. The encryption implementation uses the Olm and Megolm protocols, which are based on the Signal Protocol's Double Ratchet algorithm. Slack stores all messages, files, and metadata on its centralized servers. On free plans, Slack limits message history, effectively holding older data hostage behind paid tiers. On paid plans, Slack retains all data and provides workspace administrators with access to all messages, including direct messages, through Compliance exports. Slack scans message content for search indexing, link previews, and other features. The platform collects usage analytics, device information, and behavioral data. Slack's acquisition by Salesforce in 2021 expanded the potential scope of data sharing within the Salesforce ecosystem. Slack does not offer end-to-end encryption; messages are encrypted in transit and at rest, but Slack holds the keys and can access all content. Feature-wise, Slack excels with its polished interface, extensive integration ecosystem (over 2,400 apps), threaded conversations, Huddles for quick audio calls, Canvas for shared documents, and Workflow Builder for automation. Element offers threads, voice and video calls (via Jitsi or native Element Call), widgets, bots, and bridges to other platforms (Slack, Discord, IRC, and more). Slack's integrations are more numerous and polished, but Element's bridges allow users to participate in Slack conversations from Element, combining the best of both worlds. Slack is easier to set up for non-technical teams, while Element may require more initial configuration, especially for self-hosted deployments. For organizations using Element's hosted Matrix service (Element Server Suite), the setup experience is much simpler. Element wins on privacy because it offers genuine data sovereignty, end-to-end encryption, and open-source transparency. Organizations handling sensitive communications, whether in healthcare, legal, government, or journalism, should seriously consider Element as a Slack alternative that does not require surrendering all data to a third-party corporation.

Recommended for Privacy
