Known Incidents

In 2016, Uber concealed a massive data breach affecting 57 million riders and drivers, paying the hackers $100,000 in ransom disguised as a bug bounty. The cover-up led to the CSO's criminal conviction.

Uber's 'God View' tool was used by employees to track the real-time locations of riders, including journalists and politicians, without authorization. This was revealed in 2014 and led to regulatory investigations.

In 2017, it was revealed that Uber used a tool called 'Greyball' to deliberately evade regulators and law enforcement in cities where it operated illegally, using collected rider data to identify government officials.

A 2022 leak of 124,000 internal documents ('Uber Files') revealed systematic lobbying, rule-breaking, and exploitation of driver data across dozens of countries, with executives aware of illegal activities.

In 2023, Uber was fined 290 million euros by the Dutch Data Protection Authority for transferring European driver data to US servers without adequate data protection safeguards.

How to Opt Out

Minimizing Uber's data collection is difficult given the app's reliance on location tracking, but several steps can help. In the Uber app, go to Settings > Privacy and review all options. Disable location sharing with the app when not actively requesting a ride. On iOS, set Uber's location access to 'While Using the App' under Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Uber. On Android, similarly restrict to 'Only while using the app.' Disable Uber's access to your contacts in your phone's settings. Under the Uber app's Privacy settings, disable 'Share Live Location' unless you specifically need it. Opt out of personalized marketing under Settings > Privacy > Marketing Preferences. Review and delete your trip history periodically, though be aware Uber retains this data on its servers regardless. Do not connect social media accounts to Uber. Use a disposable email and a phone number not linked to other services if possible. Disable notifications to reduce engagement tracking. For payment, consider using privacy-focused payment methods such as prepaid cards rather than linking your primary bank account or credit card. Do not enable Uber's WiFi features. When not using Uber, force-close the app to prevent background location tracking. Be aware that Uber tracks your battery level and research has shown they may use this to determine price sensitivity. Consider using public transit, cycling, or walking for regular commutes and reserving ride-sharing for infrequent use. When you do need ride-sharing, compare privacy practices across services or use traditional taxi services that collect less data. Request your complete data archive through Uber's privacy portal to understand the extent of data collected. If you delete your Uber account, be aware that some data may be retained for legal and regulatory compliance.
