Data Collected
Known Incidents
In 2020, Lyft settled a class-action lawsuit for failing to adequately protect driver data after a breach exposed driver license numbers, names, and other personal information.
A 2018 report revealed that Lyft employees had access to customer ride data, and multiple incidents of employees looking up personal trip information of acquaintances and ex-partners were documented internally.
In 2019, a security vulnerability in Lyft's system allowed unauthorized access to driver documents, including driver's licenses, vehicle registrations, and insurance documents.
Lyft faced a 2022 lawsuit alleging it collected and stored biometric data from drivers through its identity verification system without proper consent as required by Illinois' BIPA.
In 2023, Lyft's IPO filings revealed the company shared rider data with numerous third-party analytics and advertising firms, far more extensively than users expected from its privacy policy.
How to Opt Out
To reduce Lyft's data collection, start by reviewing the app's privacy settings. In the Lyft app, go to Settings and review your Privacy preferences. Disable data sharing for marketing and analytics where available. On your device, restrict Lyft's location access to 'Only While Using' rather than 'Always.' On iOS, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Lyft and select 'While Using the App.' On Android, navigate to Settings > Apps > Lyft > Permissions > Location and choose 'Only while using the app.' Revoke Lyft's access to your contacts in your device's permission settings. Disable the microphone permission, which Lyft requests for hands-free calling but can be managed without app-level access. Turn off notifications except for active ride updates to minimize engagement tracking. Do not link your social media accounts to Lyft. Use a payment method that provides limited personal data, such as a prepaid debit card. Avoid saving multiple addresses in the app. Clear your ride history periodically through the app, though Lyft retains server-side records. Do not use Lyft's bike or scooter rentals as these create additional location tracking data points. When not actively using Lyft, force-quit the app to prevent any background data collection. Consider using a separate email address for your Lyft account that is not linked to your primary digital identity. Disable Bluetooth when not needed, as Lyft can use Bluetooth beacons for location tracking. For daily commuting, invest in public transit passes, cycling infrastructure, or carpooling with known individuals to eliminate corporate ride tracking entirely. If you must use ride-sharing, request your data archive from Lyft periodically to monitor what is being collected, and consider alternating between services to prevent any single company from building a complete profile.
