Data Collected
Known Incidents
In 2019, DoorDash suffered a data breach affecting 4.9 million customers, delivery workers, and merchants, exposing names, email addresses, delivery addresses, phone numbers, and hashed passwords.
DoorDash was found in 2020 to be sharing user data with third-party analytics companies including Google and Facebook without adequate user disclosure, leading to a California privacy investigation.
In 2023, DoorDash's data practices were scrutinized after reports revealed the company built detailed dietary profiles of users that were shared with food manufacturers and restaurant chains for targeted marketing.
DoorDash faced a class-action lawsuit in 2020 for its tipping policy, where tips were used to subsidize base pay rather than supplement it, and the controversy revealed extensive tracking of tipping behavior.
In 2021, DoorDash was caught using dark patterns to add items and services to customer orders, including a DashPass subscription that was difficult to cancel, collecting ongoing payment data.
How to Opt Out
Minimizing DoorDash's data collection requires addressing several areas of the app and service. In the DoorDash app, go to Account > Settings and review privacy-related options. Disable marketing emails and push notifications under notification preferences. If available, opt out of data sharing for personalized advertising. Disable location access when not actively placing or tracking an order by going to your phone's settings and setting DoorDash's location permission to 'While Using' or 'Never.' Revoke access to contacts and camera in your device permissions. Do not save multiple delivery addresses in the app. Avoid using the saved payment method feature and instead enter payment details manually for each order, or use a virtual credit card number through your bank. Delete past delivery addresses you no longer use. Clear your order history regularly within the app. Do not connect your DoorDash account to Facebook, Google, or other social accounts. Be aware that DoorDash builds detailed dietary profiles based on your ordering patterns, including health conditions, allergies, and lifestyle preferences. This data is commercially valuable and shared with restaurant partners and food brands. For a more private approach to food delivery, call restaurants directly and place orders over the phone, or visit their websites to order directly without a third-party intermediary. Many restaurants offer their own delivery services or use their own ordering systems that collect far less data. Support restaurants that have their own apps and ordering portals. Use your browser with tracker-blocking extensions if you must browse DoorDash. If you decide to delete your DoorDash account, first download your data through the app's privacy settings, cancel any active DashPass subscription, remove saved payment methods, and then request account deletion. Be aware that DoorDash may retain some data for legal and financial compliance purposes.
