Known Incidents

In 2023, a US Air Force National Guardsman (Jack Teixeira) leaked classified Pentagon documents through Discord servers, revealing the platform's inadequate monitoring of sensitive content sharing.

Discord.io, a third-party service, suffered a 2023 data breach exposing 760,000 users' data including usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords, highlighting risks of Discord's third-party ecosystem.

A 2022 investigation by NBC News found Discord was used extensively by predators to target minors, with the platform's private server model making detection and moderation extremely difficult.

In 2021, privacy researchers revealed that Discord scans and analyzes all messages, images, and links shared on the platform, including in private DMs, contradicting many users' expectations of privacy.

Multiple white supremacist groups used Discord to organize the 2017 Charlottesville Unite the Right rally, revealing the platform's failure to monitor extremist activity despite having access to all communications.

How to Opt Out

To reduce Discord's data collection, go to User Settings (gear icon) > Privacy & Safety. Disable 'Allow Discord to track screen reader usage' and disable all data usage options. Under 'How We Use Your Data,' turn off 'Use data to improve Discord,' 'Use data to customize my Discord experience,' and 'In-game rewards.' Set 'Who can send you friend requests' to 'Friends of Friends' or specific server members to reduce social graph building. Under 'Activity Privacy,' disable 'Share your detected activities with others' to stop game activity tracking. Disable 'Display current activity as a status message.' In Settings > Authorized Apps, review and remove any bots or apps that have access to your account data. Be aware that Discord scans all messages, even in DMs, and retains them indefinitely. Under Settings > Activity Settings > Game Activity, turn off 'Display currently running game.' Avoid using Discord's voice features for sensitive conversations as metadata is retained. In your device settings, revoke Discord's access to your microphone, camera, and screen recording when not actively using those features. Use Discord through a web browser with privacy extensions rather than the desktop app, which has deeper system access and runs as a background process. Do not connect your Spotify, Xbox, PlayStation, or other accounts to Discord as this creates cross-platform tracking. Disable Rich Presence for all games. Use a VPN to mask your IP address when connecting to Discord. For sensitive group communications, switch to Element (Matrix), which offers end-to-end encrypted messaging and can be self-hosted. If you must use Discord, assume everything you type, share, or say can be accessed by Discord staff and potentially law enforcement. Regularly request your data package through Settings > Privacy & Safety > Request all of my Data to understand what Discord retains.
