Known Incidents

In 2019, Samsung's privacy policy update for Bixby revealed that voice data was shared with unnamed third-party service providers for processing, with inadequate transparency about who these partners were.

Samsung Galaxy phones were found in 2020 to be sending device data to Chinese servers through a pre-installed app (Qihoo 360 storage cleaner), raising concerns about Bixby and Samsung's third-party data sharing.

A 2020 vulnerability in Samsung's Find My Mobile service could have been exploited to factory reset phones, make calls, and access personal data, with the flaw remaining unpatched for months after discovery.

Samsung Smart TVs were caught in 2015 recording and transmitting living room conversations through their always-on voice recognition feature, with Samsung's privacy policy warning that spoken words could be captured and sent to third parties.

In 2022, Samsung suffered a data breach through its systems that exposed customer personal information including names, dates of birth, and product registration data, affecting an undisclosed number of customers.

How to Opt Out

To minimize Bixby's data collection on Samsung devices, start by disabling Bixby's active features. Press and hold the Bixby button (or side button) and go to Bixby Settings. Under 'Bixby voice,' disable the wake-up command 'Hi, Bixby' to prevent passive microphone listening. Turn off the Bixby key or remap it to another function using Settings > Advanced Features > Side Key and selecting a different action. In Bixby Settings, go to 'About Bixby' and look for data management options. Disable 'Customized voice response' and any options that send voice data to Samsung servers. Under 'Marketing and Privacy,' opt out of all data sharing for improvement and personalization. Delete your Bixby voice interaction history by going to Bixby Settings > My Data and removing all stored interactions. On your Samsung device more broadly, go to Settings > Privacy and disable all unnecessary data sharing. Under Settings > Biometrics and Security, review what biometric data is stored. Go to Settings > Privacy > Customization Service and disable Samsung's personalization features. Disable Samsung's advertising ID under Settings > Privacy > Ads and opt out of interest-based advertising. Review Samsung Daily or Samsung Free panels and disable them by long-pressing on the home screen and toggling off the leftmost panel. For Samsung Health, review privacy settings and disable data syncing if you do not need cloud backup. Disable Bixby Routines if you do not use them, as they track your behavioral patterns and location. Uninstall or disable Bixby Home, Bixby Voice, and Bixby Vision through Settings > Apps > Show System Apps. For the most private Samsung experience, install a custom ROM like LineageOS (if your device supports it), which removes all Samsung and Google services entirely. Alternatively, consider switching to a Google Pixel phone running GrapheneOS for a fully de-corporatized mobile experience.
