Matrix Decentralization

Unlike centralized messengers, Matrix is a federation of independent servers. You can host your own server and communicate with users on any other Matrix server. No single entity controls the network.

Encryption in Matrix

Matrix supports end-to-end encryption through the Megolm protocol. E2EE is available for rooms that enable it. Cross-signing and key verification help prevent man-in-the-middle attacks.

Privacy Trade-offs of Federation

Federation means message metadata is shared between servers. Your home server and the recipient's server both see communication patterns. Server administrators have access to metadata and potentially room membership.

Self-Hosting for Maximum Privacy

Running your own Matrix server gives maximum control. However, this requires technical expertise. For simpler guaranteed privacy, WeTalkin provides zero-knowledge encryption without the complexity of self-hosting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Element/Matrix truly decentralized?

Yes. Anyone can run a Matrix server and join the federation. However, many users rely on the Matrix.org server, creating some centralization in practice.

Is Matrix E2EE by default?

E2EE is available but must be enabled per room. Not all rooms use encryption by default. WeTalkin encrypts everything by default with no option to disable.

Should I self-host Matrix?

Self-hosting gives maximum control but requires server administration skills. For most users, WeTalkin provides stronger default privacy without technical overhead.
