What Is Onion Routing? Layered Encryption Guide

Onion routing wraps your data in multiple layers of encryption, like the layers of an onion. Each relay peels one layer, ensuring no single point can see both sender and destination.

Layers of Encryption

Your data is encrypted three times before leaving your device—once for each relay in the circuit. Each relay decrypts one layer to reveal routing instructions to the next hop, then discards the decrypted layer.

Circuit Construction

Your Tor client selects three relays and negotiates encryption keys with each. The circuit is rebuilt every ten minutes to prevent long-term tracking. This constant rotation makes traffic analysis extremely difficult.

Onion Routing vs Standard VPN

A VPN creates one encrypted tunnel to one server—that server sees all your traffic. Onion routing distributes trust across three independent relays so no single entity has complete visibility.

Onion Routing in Messaging

Some privacy-focused messengers route messages through onion networks for metadata protection. WeTalkin encrypts message content end-to-end, and combining it with onion routing adds anonymity to an already private conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called onion routing?

Each layer of encryption is peeled off at a different relay, like peeling layers of an onion. The metaphor represents the multi-layered encryption approach.

Does onion routing hide what I say or who I am?

Onion routing hides who you are (anonymity). To protect what you say (content), you need end-to-end encryption like WeTalkin provides.

Is onion routing slow?

Yes, routing through multiple relays adds latency. For real-time messaging, WeTalkin's direct encrypted connection is faster while still protecting content privacy.
