Different encryption algorithms serve different purposes in secure messaging. Understanding how they work together helps you evaluate the security claims of messaging platforms and appreciate why certain combinations are more trustworthy than others.

Symmetric encryption (like AES) uses the same key for encryption and decryption—fast but requires secure key exchange. Asymmetric encryption (like RSA) uses paired public/private keys—slower but solves the key exchange problem. Modern messaging uses both: asymmetric for key exchange and symmetric for message encryption.
AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit keys) is approved for top-secret government communications. It is virtually unbreakable with current computing technology—brute-forcing 256-bit keys would take longer than the age of the universe. ChaCha20 is a stream cipher that performs exceptionally well on mobile devices without hardware AES acceleration. Combined with Poly1305 for authentication, it provides security comparable to AES-256-GCM while using less battery on older devices. It is used in TLS 1.3 and many messaging protocols.
Curve25519 provides the asymmetric key exchange used in modern messaging protocols. It offers excellent security with smaller key sizes and faster operations than RSA. The Signal Protocol uses X25519 for Diffie-Hellman key agreement, generating unique encryption keys for each message.
