Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Encryption

Symmetric encryption (like AES) uses the same key for encryption and decryption—fast but requires secure key exchange. Asymmetric encryption (like RSA) uses paired public/private keys—slower but solves the key exchange problem. Modern messaging uses both: asymmetric for key exchange and symmetric for message encryption.

AES-256: The Industry Standard

AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard with 256-bit keys) is approved for top-secret government communications. It is virtually unbreakable with current computing technology—brute-forcing 256-bit keys would take longer than the age of the universe. AES-256 is the symmetric encryption backbone of most secure messaging platforms.

ChaCha20-Poly1305: Mobile-Optimized Security

ChaCha20 is a stream cipher that performs exceptionally well on mobile devices without hardware AES acceleration. Combined with Poly1305 for authentication, it provides security comparable to AES-256-GCM while using less battery on older devices. It is used in TLS 1.3 and many messaging protocols.

Curve25519 and Elliptic Curve Cryptography

Curve25519 provides the asymmetric key exchange used in modern messaging protocols. It offers excellent security with smaller key sizes and faster operations than RSA. The Signal Protocol uses X25519 for Diffie-Hellman key agreement, generating unique encryption keys for each message.

What WeTalkin Uses

WeTalkin employs a combination of Curve25519 for key exchange, AES-256-GCM or ChaCha20-Poly1305 for message encryption (selected based on device capabilities), and HMAC-SHA256 for message authentication. This combination represents current best practice for secure messaging cryptography.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which encryption algorithm is the strongest?

For symmetric encryption, AES-256 and ChaCha20 are both considered unbreakable with current technology. The strength depends on implementation rather than the algorithm alone. A well-implemented AES-256 system and a well-implemented ChaCha20 system provide equivalent security.

Can quantum computers break current encryption?

Quantum computers threaten asymmetric algorithms like RSA and current elliptic curves. AES-256 remains resistant with doubled key sizes. Post-quantum cryptography research is developing quantum-resistant alternatives. WeTalkin monitors these developments to ensure future-proof security.

How do I know which encryption an app actually uses?

Check if the app is open source—this allows independent verification. Look for published security audits by reputable firms. Review the app's technical documentation and white papers. Claims without evidence or independent verification should be treated skeptically.
