Understanding Bluesky's AT Protocol Privacy Model

Bluesky uses the AT Protocol, a federated system where your data is stored on Personal Data Servers (PDS). Unlike centralized platforms, this means your posts and interactions are distributed across multiple servers. While this offers portability, it also means your public posts are widely replicated and harder to fully delete. Choose your PDS provider carefully, as they have access to your account data. Self-hosting your PDS gives you the most control but requires technical expertise.

Managing Your Bluesky Identity and Handle

Your Bluesky handle is your public identity on the network. You can use a custom domain as your handle, which verifies your identity without revealing personal information. Go to Settings > Handle to change your display handle. Avoid using your real name in your handle if you prefer pseudonymity. Remember that your DID (Decentralized Identifier) is permanent even if you change handles, so handle changes do not erase your history.

Content Moderation and Labeling Settings

Bluesky's content labeling system lets you control what you see and how your content is categorized. Navigate to Settings > Moderation to configure content filters. Subscribe to trusted labeling services that align with your values. Be aware that third-party labelers can see what content you report.
